Web Standards and You
Posted: 04/08/2008If you recently decided to have a website built or redesigned then you probably have heard the term "web standards" used a lot. It may sound intimidating but it's really not. In fact, web standards benefit you greatly... even if you aren't looking to have a website built.
In a nut shell, web standards govern how web pages are put together so that they will display and function properly across any given internet technology (web browsers in most cases) and as new technology comes out they will continue to function properly.
Web standards can also decrease development time, simplify and decrease maintenance, reduce bandwidth and improve over all user experience by allowing web designers and developers to create more engaging content.
For a long period time, most browsers were developed differently, following their own rules. If you used the wrong browser the website was never given to function the way it was intended. This left consumers and web designers extremely aggravated. Because standards were put in place we are now starting to see continuity... admittedly, it's not 100% but hey, it's getting closer.
These are just a few points about why web standards are important and why you should look for a web designer who follows them.
